Model Hospice Benefit for Corporate Health Plans
Employees or company retirees over 64 are eligible for the Medicare hospice benefit, which is covered under Medicare Part A (hospital insurance). Medicare beneficiaries who choose hospice receive a full scope of palliative medical and support services, and grieving family members receive bereavement support for 13 months after the death. Grief services prepare grieving employees to return to work and resume a productive work-life.
Employers wishing to offer a high quality, cost-effective benefit for employees under 65 should consider providing a hospice benefit that mimics the Medicare benefit. Local hospices are available to provide details about coverage and reimbursement.
Medicare-certified hospices are paid on a per-diem basis and Medicare beneficiaries are offered the following services without charge:

• Nursing care
• Medical appliances and supplies
• Drugs for symptom management and pain relief
• Short-term inpatient and respite care
• Homemaker and home health aide services
• Social work service
• Spiritual care
• Volunteer participation
• Bereavement services
