Tina, a 21 yr. old girl who had never been faced with the death of a loved one, was confronted with the imminent death of a beloved grandfather. Hospice was recommended by the doctor and accepted by the family, but Tina had "scary" images of what went on in a hospice and feared the worst for her grandfather. Tina used the "Ask Helen" feature on our website to raise her fears and concerns for her grandfather's well-being. Based on the correspondence, she took Helen's advice and initiated a conversation with hospice staff, which she found extremely reassuring and comforting, "always ready with a hug." Although her grandfather died soon after admission to the hospice, her experience of the death was not as fearful as she had imagined and she was relieved that his passing was peaceful. What might have been a frightening rite of passage became a heartwarming growth experience for this young girl because of the information and support she received from "Ask Helen" and she was very grateful. *name was changed to protect identity "Ask Helen" is a free service for adults over the age of 18 who are grieving the death of a family member, friend, student, colleague, employee, supervisor or even a pet.
